Infrared Rays is the name of the wireless controller included with Playdia consoles.[1]
The controller was originally unveiled by Bandai as part of the BA-X prototype at the Tokyo Toy Show in June 1994,[2] about 3 months before it was renamed the Playdia Quick interactive System.[3] The controller uses the infrared band to communicate wirelessly with an effective range of about 16 feet.[4]
Alternate controllers[]
- Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon SuperS: Hiragana Lessons with Sailor Moon! included a "Kaleido Moon Scope" (カレイドムーンスコープ) scepter-type controller for use with the game.[5]
- Deluxe editions of Ultraman: Hiragana Mission included a "Special Armband" (スペシュウムバンド) controller for optional use with the game.[6]
Aftermarket use[]
After the Playdia platform was discontinued in 1996, Bandai subsidiary Banpresto repurposed the unsold consoles into coin-operated kinetoscopes called Micha King (みちゃ王) that played anime clips in Japanese arcades. The custom cabinet contained an infrared LED that was set up to communicate with the existing receiver in the Playdia console's electronics.[7][8]
